DESCRIPTION:Event details: https://xrboston.org/action/red-rebel-internati
onal-day-of-action-cop-29/\n\nXR Boston will be participating in the Red R
ebel International Day of Action on Saturday November 9 in protest of COP
 29. The event will start at 2pm. Meet us at the Boston Public Garden entra
nce at the intersection of Arlington and Boylston streets near the Arlingt
on MBTA green line station. Together we will move through the Common and e
nvirons as a funeral procession with die-ins. Feel free to dress in black
.\n\nThere is no lack of government inaction on the climate crisis in 2024
 . [According to a recent UN report](https://www.unep.org/resources/emissio
ns-gap-report-2024)\, “countries have made no progress in cutting emissi
ons and tackling global warming.” [(1)](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/
 24/climate/un-climate-change-global-emissions-report.html) Massachusetts
was part of this lack of progress. Currently\, climate legislation is caug
ht up in partisan politics. Private plane use is expanding at a rapid pace
and the gas companies continue to build new infrastructure. The only thin
g that the Healey administration seems to have managed was [helping Nibi t
 he beaver](https://www.mass.gov/news/photo-release-governor-healey-visits-
nibi-the-beaver). \n\nCOP 29 will also be one of the year’s biggest dis
appointments. \n\nThe Conference of the Parties (COP)\, an annual UN-spons
ored climate conference\, will be taking place in Baku\, Azerbaijan\, mark
ing its 29th year. [Oil makes up 90% of Azerbaijan's exports.](https://ww
 w.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/17/cop29-at-a-crossroads-in-azerb
aijan-with-focus-on-climate-finance) This year’s focus is on determining
financial reparations from the Global North to the Global South\, address
ing the impacts of climate change caused by the North's fossil fuel use. T
he Global South is already facing severe consequences\, including rising s
ea levels\, flooding\, and drought. While many advocate for substantial re
parations\, powerful interests in wealthy countries are lobbying to minimi
ze these financial commitments. In response\, protests are taking place th
roughout the world this week to demand meaningful support for those most a
ffected by climate change. \n\nEven though\, the gathering doesn't start u
ntil November 11\, we are anticipating the convention's failure. Past conf
erences have not addressed the climate crisis. Wealthy nations with fossil
fuel interests control the meetings. Research by economists Nicholas Ster
n and Vera Songwe in 2022 [suggested about 2.4 trillion dollars would be n
eeded annually for developing countries to tackle the climate crisis](http
 s://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/08/developing-countries-clima
te-crisis-funding-2030-report-nicholas-stern) excluding China. It is unlik
ely\, to say the least\, that COP 29 will be able to find an equitable sol
ution for the Global South.\n\nThe rain date is Sunday November 10. Hope t
 o see you there!
