DESCRIPTION:Event details: https://xrboston.org/action/stop-polluting-east
ie-oct23/\n\nAir pollution is a terminal illness in East Boston. It is tim
e to step up and protest the numerous and continuously increasing harms in
flicted on our community. East Boston has been a vibrant immigrant hub for
centuries. Like so many cities with similar histories\, residents are on
the receiving end of systemic environmental injustices. The burden is not
bearable anymore.\n\n* According to the [Logan Airport Health Study](https
 ://web.northeastern.edu/visualizingeastie/asthma-is-more-likely-for-childr
en-living-near-logan-airport/)\, children in East Boston are 4 times more
likely to exhibit signs of asthma compared with children in other areas. A
dults are twice as likely to show signs of chronic obstructive pulmonary d
 isease (COPD).\n\n* The neighborhood is a ["hotspot"](https://www.wgbh.org
 /news/local/2022-12-13/how-logan-airport-almost-destroyed-east-boston-and-
how-east-boston-is-still-fighting-back) for many different types of cancer
\, suggesting environmental causes.\n\n* The community has a higher burden
of obesity than most neighborhoods in the city. 63% of adults in Eastie h
ave obesity. Public school students across all grades have a higher percen
tage of overweight and obese students than Massachusetts in general. (see
[community health needs assessment report conducted by Massachusetts Gener
 al Hospital](https://www.massgeneral.org/assets/mgh/pdf/community-health/c
chi/20191016-chna-report.pdf))\n\n* East Boston has the [lowest tree canop
 y coverage](https://www.boston.gov/sites/default/files/file/2020/09/Change
-assessment_w_MJW-letter.pdf) in the city\, due in no small part to Logan
airport. This contributes to many urban heat islands\, or hotter temperatu
res\, on average\, than most other neighborhoods in the region. \n\n\nPlea
