People's Assembly for Demand Change Proposal
Come participate in our People's Assembly to hear a proposal to revise XR Boston's Second Demand!
Vegan pizza will be served, please RSVP for an accurate headcount
XR Boston has 4 demands, developed in tandem with XR Global's demands in 2019. They are as follows: 1. Tell the Truth - The government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change. 2. Act Now - The government must take immediate action to halt biodiversity loss and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025. 3. Beyond Politics - The government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens' Assembly on climate and ecological justice. 4. Just Transition - There must be a just transition that prioritizes the most vulnerable people and establishes indigenous sovereignty and remediation led by and for communities suffering environmental injustice.
XR's second demand target date of 2025 was chosen to reflect the urgency of the climate crisis, to limit warming below 1.5C, and to put the responsibility on the United States and Massachusetts as both a historically large emitter and an economic powerhouse to lead the transition. Now that we are in 2025, we are scheduling a People's Assembly to hear a proposal to change this demand from net zero by 2025 to "90% emissions reduction by 2030". Though this is the formal proposal to be heard, the proposal can be modified based on feedback and discussions from the assembly.
This will be our first time practicing a People's Assembly of this scale and participation is highly encouraged, especially folks who are actively engaged in working or affinity groups!
The assembly will start at 6PM on July 17th and will last a maximum of 3 hours. If we have not reached a consensus in 3 hours, another assembly will be scheduled at a later date. Please plan to arrive 10 mins beforehand so that we may begin promptly. We will be located in the Friend's Room at the Friends Meeting at Cambridge, 5 Longfellow Park, Cambridge, MA 02138
