Massachusetts is in *CRITICAL condition*

The climate crisis is here. In 2024, we had unpredictable storms and floods in the winter and spring, an [extreme heat wave in the summer](https://www.uml.edu/news/department-news/2024/extreme-heat-waves-aren-t-just-summer.aspx), the [longest drought on record](https://www.mass.gov/news/critical-drought-declared-across-massachusetts), and [more than 200 destructive wildfires across the state](https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/335951506d3d46fba57023a4442a7093).

Ecosystems are collapsing: [Scientists agree that we are currently undergoing the sixth mass extinction](https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/a43680664/sixth-mass-extinction-timeline/). Every species, including the human species, plays an important role in Earth's ecosystems. Because of this, global conservation is more pressing than ever.

Only about 5% of the land and 1.5% of the ocean in Massachusetts are protected from extractive industries, such as logging, mining and drilling, a far cry from the [30% nationwide pledge](https://www.campaignfornature.org/why-30-1)

The climate and nature crisis are interconnected. The world around us is changing faster than we could have expected or prepared for.

This time is *CRITICAL*!
------------------

There is no time to waste. Urgent action is needed. Extinction Rebellion demands that leaders must

1. Declare a climate and ecological emergency now.
2. Immediate moratorium of commercial logging, drilling, and other extractive industries from conservation land and waters.
3. Restore and expand critical habitats, focusing on endangered species diversity.
4. Prioritize Indigenous knowledge and leadership in the planning and execution of these efforts.

You are *CRITICAL*!!
------------------

This is real. We are in a serious critical condition. This affects **YOU**. [You're the most dangerous species in global history.](https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-54357899). Once a species is extinct, its lost forever.

What can you do? Help to restore habitats and protest projects that cause local habitat loss in your community. **Join Extinction Rebellion! We fight mass extinction with a mass movement!**
