XR Boston Leads the New England Climate Social Media Scene!
We're in rarefied company here in New England, where there are no shortage of strong climate justice groups with which to engage. In Boston alone, we have XR Boston, 350 Mass, Sierra Club Mass, Sunrise Boston, Mothers Out Front, Mass Climate Action Network, Elders Climate Action Mass, and many more. During this era when traditional media outlets have become less predictable in their climate coverage, social media presence is crucial to get attention and attract more participants. We at XR Boston recognized that need early on, and we have invested years of time and staffing into strengthening our presence online. It's paying off.
Right now on Bluesky, XR Boston has 4,822 followers. The next highest New England climate group's followership is a respectable 1,800. That means we are leading with 167.88% more followers. On Instagram, a competitive and dynamic social media platform, XR Boston also leads the pack with 4,302 followers, ahead of the next highest group's 4,004. The YouTube numbers are also encouraging, with XR Boston keeping an easy 32% lead over the next highest group's subscribership. Platform by platform, our content and messaging are the most viewed.
Our recent Instagram post on the MA State House Sloth Action is already one of our most-liked posts ever, with 5,932 likes! This is proof that our approach to actions (eye-catching and fun, while still engaging with serious issues and holding people to account) holds people's attention.
This isn't a competition; this rising tide lifts all boats in the climate movement. Any views, comments, or shares that our content receives is a win for us all. However, these numbers are a clear indication that our work on social media since 2019 is worth it.
Do you have big ideas for the biggest social media presence in the New England climate movement? XR Boston's Media & Messaging Working Group is looking for new volunteers to create content together! Email XRBoston.Media@gmail.com to find out more.
