Climate Emergency Week Calendar
Extinction Rebellion Kicks off Spring 2021 with Virtual & In-Person Actions Across MA Demanding Response to Climate Emergency
*See schedule of events below, graphic may not include all events.
By the end of 2020, over a dozen towns in Massachusetts had sounded the alarm by declaring a Climate Emergency. The United States and the world continue barreling unabated towards climate catastrophe and are on track to blow past the 1.5C or even 2C climate goals of the Paris Agreement. At the same time, states like Massachusetts that claim to lead on climate & sustainability have spent years bickering over legislation to “green” our economy, while the scale and urgency of the climate and ecological emergency continue to grow.
Extinction Rebellion (XR) believes that the first step to change is telling the truth. Government and corporate inaction have sent the Earth into biodiversity collapse and a climate emergency. Leaders must be educated and honest about the scale of collective action required to change this dangerous trajectory. From April 5th to 10th, we invite you to spend a moment reflecting on the past, present, and future of our shared Earth by joining XR for Climate Emergency Week events and demanding urgent action to address these two crises.
Sign up for talks led by your Massachusetts friends and neighbors on topics ranging from the science and ethos behind collective grassroots environmental action to how to create pollinator habitat in your own backyard through ecological gardening.Whether you have five minutes or five hours to devote to the climate emergency, XR Massachusetts invites you to act now with us, virtually or in-person (safely, with masks and distancing).
The last year has been trying and tragic for all, starkly demonstrating the fragility of our society and the existential risks posed by continued ecological destruction. It also demonstrated that our society’s status quo is deeply broken, with historical injustices compounded by failures of leadership, imagination, and compassion. As we head into a brighter Spring, Extinction Rebellion invites our friends & neighbors to celebrate the love, care, and inventiveness that humans have shown and to feel inspired that a fairer, sustainable future is possible.
Winds of Change are bringing energy for regeneration to Massachusetts from April 10th to 18th. Please join us on Thursday, April 8th to make your own wind catcher at home then meet up with Extinction Rebellion at any of our events across the state from the 10th to 18th. We’ll be flying colorful wind catchers and flags in stand outs in at least 5 towns to inspire our neighbors to rise up against “business as usual” and re-discover the most important things in life - health, compassion, and working together for a better future. You can register for events at xrmass.org/events
Winds of Change is part of the ongoing Emergency Everywhere led by local XR groups across Massachusetts. This campaign demands that towns declare a Climate Emergency in recognition of the threats posed to our infrastructure, environment, security, and welfare because of the climate and ecological crises.
