XR Boston's Statement on the Presidential Election
Extinction Rebellion focuses on the protection of Earth and the survival of life over the long haul. Our politics have been corrupted by money, and a single election will not solve that problem. We support the democratic process while remaining non-partisan and believe tasking a Citizen’s Assembly, representative of ALL people in the United States, is the best path forward on climate and social justice.
Over the last four years, we watched as our democracy began to crumble and social order unraveled. The degradation of organized civilization will only increase as the planet continues to heat. The true nightmare is 2 degrees Celsius of global heating triggering violence, famine, water shortages, unprecedented suffering, the collapse of human civilization, and mass extinction.
Acting on the climate crisis is one of Biden's top campaign promises, but we can’t be complacent with promises. His climate plan is not enough to avert climate and ecological collapse. Biden must do much more, including urgent action to protect biodiversity and rapidly ending our dependence on oil, natural gas, and coal in order to drastically lower fossil fuel emissions.
The Arctic methane deposits - what some call the ‘sleeping giant’ - are thawing and Biden’s plan will not do enough to slow this.
We stand with the countless climate and social justice movements that are pushing our politicians to be more than ‘not fascist.' We demand that we radically restructure society from the ground up to confront the many crises we are facing and manifest a green and just transition as we recover from the impacts of COVID-19.
Non-violent civil disobedience is what we need to turn the tide. Everyone must become an activist and step into this moment. Reach out to your loved ones, talk to the people around you, and get organized. This is the moment to ramp up the pressure.
Here are some basic resources on non-violent civil disobedience. Join us at XR Boston to take urgent action on the climate and ecological crises in order to ensure a safe and habitable Earth for our children and generations to come.
